Can you be irish without an irish first and second name.?

Can you be Irish without a known Irish or first name or surname, does it matter what?

Can you be irish without an irish first and second name.?
This is a really stupid question.

You can be called Mohamed and still be english.

So yes.
Reply:Names themselves are not always a good indication of a person's ancestry.

To begin with there are no pure nationalities or no pure races or ethnicities. The Normans from France invaded England and a little over 100 years later they invaded Ireland. There were laws forbidding them to marry the "natives," speak the Irish language or adopt Irish customs, but they were very smart and did anyway. There is an old saying "they became more Irish than the Irish themselves."

Names that begin with "Fitz" come from that period as well as Costello, Burke and many others.
Reply:Yes, case in point---Eunice Kennedy Shriver

I also had a friend in graduate school whose parents were natives of Ireland, but she won a full-tuition scholarship on the strength of her divorced-husband's Hispanic surname. Her first name was French. Understandably, the graduate program was a little shocked when she first appeared on campus upon taking back her maiden name.
Reply:Annother good question, two strands, people actually born in Ireland ,Irish citizens, whatever their names,Bob Geldof a prime example. tho I think the original question may have been aimed at people like myself of Irish descent,I dont have an obvious Irish surname.tho in the town where I was born people assumed the name was Irish.

where not all called Murphy or Kelly
Reply:Yes you can be Irish.

But you can't be an indigenous Irish person.

It's like being Australian, American or Canadian.

Everyone born in those nations is of that nationality, but only the Aboriginals/Indians are the indigenous people of those lands.

So it would depend on what your families history is as to whether one could lay claim to being indigenous irish.

Reply:If you don't have the blood of the Pixie in you then you cannot be Irish. A lot of people think they are Irish but they are not. It's all this immigration, with people moving around the world at such a rate they don't know where they're coming from or where they're going to. It's a good job we have the Pixie blood in us, or none of us would ever know if we were Irish or not.
Reply:No. If both your mother and father are 100% Irish and they give you a name they both like that isn't Irish - Elvis Presley or Thomas Jefferson or Nelson Mandela - your nationality changes, and in the case of Nelson, your skin would darken.

I'm kidding, of course. There are lots of Irish without Irish names. I tried "John Smith", which is the commonest name I could think of.

is the free 1880 - 1881 censuses, courtesy of the Mormons. Look at the 1880 US Census for John Smith born in Ireland. It maxes out at 200, but you could click "Show next 200" many times before it stopped. Then try "Paul" or "George" or "Samuel" which are all names that don't sound Irish.
Reply:If you are born in ireland, no matter what race your parents are, you are irish. If you are living in another country but your parents are irish, then you are still irish, but you are also from the place you were born.
Reply:Just 10 generations ago you have over 1000 grandparents who all came together to make you. You only bear the name of one of those 1000. That means you have at least 999 chances to be irish, regardless of your last name or its origins.
Reply:You can be of Irish decent without the names. I am of Irish decent without the names until I go back 4 generations because I was born in America. But if you were born in Ireland then you are Irish with or without the names
Reply:of course im irish, live and born in ireland and have a russian first name and a very very irish surname. my parents are both irish and i am 100% irish regardless of my name
Reply:Your name doesn't have to be Irish, to make you Irish. It's usually people somewhere in your family that came from Ireland. So if that's your case, then you are.
Reply:If you're from Ireland you're Irish - you don't have to be called Paddy Finnegan or whatever!!
Reply:Of course you can silly! :-P

I have an Irish name but until I can prove otherwise that's as far as it goes lol
Reply:Of course you can - doesn't matter what you're called, if you're born in Ireland, then you are Irish!

Reply:Names don't matter - if you have Irish heritage then you're Irish
Reply:Absolutely - yes .
Reply:Yeah, I'm half Irish and have a Spanish/Italian last name.
Reply:yer
Reply:not fully irish

all ur isrish blood has to come from ur moms side of the family, or if your dads irish his ancestors lost the irish name thru a woman
