How do you pronounce the Irish name Eithne?

We met an Irish woman on holiday who was called Eithne (eth-nee) and we really liked her name. When we found the name in a baby name book we fell in love with it and called our daughter Eithne. However, we have since learned that there are many different pronounciations and the one we chose Eth-nee , does not seem that common in Ireland. We are soon to move to Ireland (we're English) and don;t want Eithne to be teased at school about incorrect pronounciation of her name! Any advice?

You could start pronouncing it Etna which is how we pronounce it here or spell it differently to fit your pronunciation.
Reply:I am Scots, but we, whose Gaidhlig pronounciation is quite similar to Irish, would tend to make the 'th' a kind of half-silent 'h', making the name sound like 'E(h)N-yuh', a bit like the well-known singer with the voice like an angel (heard her version of 'Marble Halls'?) Report Abuse

Reply:just call her enya ...
