A clan is a family.
What was the name of your Irish clan, and how did they come up with clans in Ireland?
I am also from the Martin clan, but the Martin clan is huge, and world wide. I believe there are tons of others, Martins are generally northmen, celtic and viking. Report Abuse
Reply:Originally clans were just a group of relatives who aligned themselves together for protection. See, back then inbreeding was not in the least bit unusual. In the early US history there was a family group in Tennessee who were inter bread and had this recessive gene that came out and made them look blue. Google THE BLUE PEOPLE OF TROUBLESOME CREEK. So, back to Clans. Times were rough and U had to have help if u were gona survive. Relatives came together for protection. Clans were an alliance of relatives. Later it took on a different meaning. Ex. KKK. I think it originated in Scotland but Scotland and Ireland were so close that it just migrated. So, when we consider that a Clan is nothing more than a family, I must say I am from the McGinnis and Martin Clans. These are Irish Clans.
Reply:Clans were extended family groupings plus their hangers on, dependents, and, if the clan was successful, those they conquered and annexed. Ireland's clans extend back into pre-history, and have a lot of myth associated with their origins.
Supposed family clan: Mahon (which was the clan of the ancient High Kings, woo woo!)
Reply:If you Ulster Scot then you may or may not have a Clan connection many do not since they came from the Lowlands of Scotland. If you Irish from Northern Ireland you will need to do the needed research to connect it to Ireland from America.
Start with Land Grants,Wills Probates,Military records usually Militia or regular army. Once you have these you can start the process that will help connecting it to Ireland or Scotland.
