What is the name of the new irish pub on the king street in alexandria virginia?

Yes, there's Murphy's and the Irish times but I was in Alexandria a month or so ago and I saw they were getting ready to open a new Irish pub. I didn't catch the name though, sorry. It's where Bullfeather's used to be. And what about Bullfeather's? That place was there forever.

What is the name of the new irish pub on the king street in alexandria virginia?

What's a good alter ego name using the words: Black and Irish?

Say you are an African-American, and your influenced with everything about Ireland. And you call yourself Black Irish but there is one problem, Black Irish is taken for something else for Ireland description. So you have to use something else as an ego, using Black and Irish. An alter ego in general.

would like the alter ego to have like a ring to it like Barack Ombama.

We just found out on Wednesday, that these miracles that I am carrying are fraternal, and are both girls. We are drawing a total blank on what to name them, as we thought we would have at least one girl.

The babies will join big brother, Finley John. Their middle names have already been decided, they will be named after their grandmothers, Anna and Leigh.

Where did the last name of SHOULDERS Name come from? Is it IRISH?

This is what I found for you in relation to the surname *Shoulders*

Surname: Shoulders

This most interesting surname may have arisen from either of two possible sources. Firstly, it may be of Anglo-Saxon origin, as a nickname for someone with broad shoulders, or some peculiarity of the shoulders, from the Olde English pre 7th Century word "sculdor", meaning shoulder. There is also a possibility, however, that the surname may be a variant of "Shouler, Shoveller", which is a metonymic occupational name for a maker or seller of shovels or for someone who regularly used a shovel in his work, from the Olde English element "scofl", and Middle English "schovel", derivatives of "scufan", to push, shove. The surname from the former source first appears in the early 12th Century (see below), while other early examples of the surname include: Robert Schuldre (Norfolk, 1275); William le Schovelere (Oxford, 1301); Simon Shulder (Sussex, 1327); and Nicholas Shouler, Schoveler (Essex, 1366). In the modern idiom the variants of the name include Shouler, Showler, Shoulders and Shoveller. Mary Shoulder, daughter of John Shoulder, was christened on November 27th 1594 at St. Margaret's, Westminster, London, while Margaret Shoulder married Stephen Mount on September 17th 1638 at St. Dunstan's, Stepney, London. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Ran Sculdur, which was dated circa 1100, in the "Old English Bynames of Devon", during the reign of King Henry 1, known as "The Lion of Justice", 1100 - 1135. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Hope this helps.

Where did the last name of SHOULDERS Name come from? Is it IRISH?

Shamrock

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

This article is about the three-leaf clover; for other meanings of the term, see shamrock (disambiguation)

The shamrock, an unofficial symbol of Ireland and Boston, Massachusetts, is a three-leafed young white clover, sometimes (rarely nowadays) Trifolium repens (white clover, known in Irish as seamair bh谩n) but more usually today Trifolium dubium (lesser clover, Irish: seamair bhu铆). However, other three-leafed plants 鈥?such as black medic (Medicago lupulina), red clover (Trifolium pratense), and Common wood sorrel (genus Oxalis) 鈥?are sometimes designated as shamrocks. The shamrock was traditionally used for its medical properties and was a popular motif in Victorian times. It is also a common way to represent Saint Patricks day, a holiday celebrated on March 17.
Reply:Seamr贸g is the Irish name for shamrock. The word is a combination ot two words 'seamair 贸g' which means 'young (贸g) clover (seamar)
Reply:"Seamroy" as called by the Celts, considered a sacred plant in Ireland. Also signals the rebirth of spring, then later a symbol of emerging Irish nationalism.

Sadhbh

Sadb

Saibh

Sithmaith

Siomha

Irish name pronunciations?
Sadhbh is pronounced sive like the word five but with a s instead of an f.

Sadb this isnt an Irish name or is an incorrect spelling of Sadhbh.

Saibh this isnt a real Irish name either and its possibly also an incorrect spelling of Sadhbh, but it is lik eth Irish word raibh which is pronaounced rev or row depending on the dialect your speaking, so "Saibh" should be pronounced sev or sow.

Sithmaith isnt an irish name either. I looked it up online and found a few claims that its means good pecase because maith means good (which it does) and sith means peace but the word sith doesnt mean anything in irsh. However it would be pronounced sih-maw, with the si sounding like sit without the t.

Siomha would be pronounced see-o-wa

Wolfram is an Irish name?

Sorry Wolfram is NOT an Irish name, either as a forname or a surname. It is not even a bastardisation of an Irish name. It sounds to me as if it may derive from Scandanavia.

Wolfram is an Irish name?
it s a germanic name. assumingly meaning "the woolf and crow from Wodan. wolf = woolf and hraban = crow

Wodan used to be the God of death and slaughter. He was riding a horse and was always escorted by a woolf and a crow. thats where the name comes from.
Reply:Nope...the name is actually English in origin, deriving from the old English word 'Wulfrun' ;-)

But then again the English language is Germanic in origin, due to the Anglo Saxon invasion into Britain at the end of the Roman Empire, so you could say that the name has germanic roots also...
Reply:I thought it was an old name for (the metal ) Mercury.
Reply:Nope not Irish...German. Im no expert but my last name is Wolfram and it means tungsten, a metal on the periodic table of elements, #76, symbolized with a "W." Tungsten is the tiny filament in a lightbulb. Another tidbit of info...the spanish name for this filament is "wolframita." Hope that helps. Also, I believe there is a city in Germany called Wolfram...
Reply:NO!!!
Reply:Definetly not. It must be German or whatever.
Reply:No it's not. There is no 'w' in the Irish (Gaelic) alphabet.
Reply:no - its liquid tungsten

Does anyone no the name of the irish game that you play in ireland, which is a bit like football/ rugby?

Gaelic Football. Gaelic football is played by teams of 15 on a rectangular grass pitch with H-shaped goals at each end. The primary object is to score by kicking/striking the ball with your hand and getting it through the goals. The team with the highest score at the end of the match wins.

Players advance the ball up the field with a combination of carrying, soloing (dropping and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands), kicking, and hand-passing to their team-mates.

Does anyone no the name of the irish game that you play in ireland, which is a bit like football/ rugby?
it called gaelic football and is known as gaelic games. the two gaelic games are gaelic football and hurling (played with sticks known as slitoirs ) and leading body is the g.a.a. or gaelic athletic association

croke park is the gaelic games headquarters where ireland temporarily are allowed by the g.a.a. to play while landsdowne is re-constructed
Reply:Its called Gaelic football. It is similar in some respects to soccer ( football or whatever you want to call it ) and rugby. Its 15 v 15 with mostly set formations. In tatical terms it would be a 1-3-3-2-3-3 formation. Players are allowed to catch the ball and advance up the picth by running with the ball in hand but they must solo ( kick the ball back to themselves ) or hop ( bounce the ball similar to basketball) every 3 steps however a player may not hop the ball twice in a row. Scoring is done by kicking or fisting ( hitting the ball off one hand with the other using a closed fist usually, a player is not allowed to throw the ball) the ball between the posts ( similar to rugby posts but with a net below crossbar ) and above the crossbar which gives them 1 point or by kicking the ball past the goalkeeper into the net which gives them a goal worth 3 points ( a goal may also be scored with the fist but it must be off a pass from another player and the player fisting the ball to the net may not catch it in between )

Does anyone know how to pronouce the girl's name Avoca? It's an Irish name.?

The name Avoca probably originates from the Avoca Village in Co. Wicklow, Ireland. The pronunciation is as follows;

Ah-vo-kah

Site 1 below gives the history of Avoca Village "The scenically located Avoca village developed on a bridging point on the Avoca river which winds its way lazily in a south-easterly direction in its floodplain to the sea at Arklow"

Site 2 is a virtual (comic) tour of the village which was the setting for a television series named Ballykissangel

Need help pronouncing an Irish name?

I have a cousin I rarely see, names Padraig McCullough, I think his surname might be a Scotch-Irish name, but I cannot pronouce either name! Can anyone help?

Need help pronouncing an Irish name?
There are two ways of pronouncing the Padraig (Irish for Patrick by the way) either Paw-rig or Pod-rig (say it fast and you'll be ok.) Or you can call him Podge, Paddy, Pat (or if in Dublin, Whacker; very old slang name not used as much these days). The last name McCullough is pronounced Mac-Cull-ah.

I was looking up irish baby names for my friend due next week. I came across the name 'Sive'.?

How the heck do you pronounce it? Has anyone ever heard of it? Is it a new name?

I was looking up irish baby names for my friend due next week. I came across the name 'Sive'.?
'Sive' is an anglicised spelling of the ancient Irish name 'Sadb' (Middle Irish Gaelic (c900-c1200) spelling or 'Sadhbh' (Early Modern Irish Gaelic (c1200-c1700)

The name comes from an obsolete Irish word meaning 'sweet' and the pronunciation rhymes with 'hive'. As non-Irish speakers would rarely recognise the pronunciation it became spelt as it was pronounced - Sive, although the Irish spelling 'Sadhbh' is commonly used in Ireland. There were many famous Sadhbhs in Irish history, one being the daughter of the High King Brian Boru.
Reply:It rhymes with jive and should be spelled Sadhbh.
Reply:Apprently it is Irish pronouned siev meaning sweet.

Stephanie is a French feminine form of the name Stephen. In Irish, Stephen is St铆of谩n (SHTEE fawn). There is no feminine equivalent in Irish, but you could make a modern one by adding "铆n": St铆of谩in铆n (SHTEE fawn een) or perhaps St铆f铆n? (SHTEE feen)--although the second one looks a little strange. An older Irish form of Stephen is Stiana (SHEE uh na), perhaps you could use this as the base to form a feminine name: Stiain铆n (SHTEE uh neen)--that's kind of pretty!

yes it is, as a surname.

It is common in Connaught, (west) and Tipperary. It is also a varient of MacKee and MacKay.

Is mackey a irish name?
A lot of Irish names were severely anglicised. Mackey is a derivative of Mac/Mc Kay/Kee or McGhee.

Incorrect spelling and grammar is a sign of immense laziness.

There is a great Irish names website on the net which also has a voice pronouncing the names (very helpful for some of those unusual spellings!) but I can't remember the address.

Hope that helps a bit.

Good luck!

Reply:Here are some of my favorites (mostly Irish, a few general Celtic):

Ronan - "little seal," from the Irish Selkie legend. I'll post a site below where you can learn more about it, if you're not familiar, but it's rather interesting. Bit of an older twist on the mermaid-loves-human myths. ;)

Cillian - generally thought to be derived from the Gaelic word for "church," but sometimes considered a diminutive of Kelly/Ceallach, as well.

Lachlan/Lochlan - from the "land of lochs" nickname used to refer to a Viking (or, by extension, a child with reddish hair/coloring in general)

Ewan - generally considered a form of Irish/Scottish Eoghan, which likely means "born of the yew tree." Also used as a Celtic form of Eugene ("well born").

Harvey - of Breton origin, meaning basically "worthy in battle"

Angus - familiar Anglicization of Aonghus, meaning "one strength." Also the Irish god of love and youth. ;)

Finnian - basically Fionn/Finn with the common diminutive suffix, so "little white one"

Findlay/Finley - Anglicized forms of Fionnlagh, meaning "white warrior"

Milo - used as an Irish form of Miles and also a short form of Maol Muire (devotee of Mary).

Seamus - Irish form of James, so "supplanter; holder of the heel or may God protect" (no definitive meaning). I also love Shea as a short form, and as a stand-alone name that means "admirable; hawk-like."

Declan - popular saint's name, possibly meaning "full of goodness"

Darragh - "little oak" or "fruitful; fertile"

Donovan - basically "little dark one" or "little dark prince"

Desmond - simply "from south Munster" (an Anglicized name taken from Gaelic Deas-Mhumhan).

Oran - from Odhran, "little pale green one."

Tadhg - "poet"

Graham/Graeme - from a Scottish surname likely meaning "gravelly homestead" or simply "gray home."

Lennox - from another Scottish surname/place name that may refer to an elm, or grove of elms.

Flynn - "red"

Flannery - "red valour"

Obviously, I could go on. LOL You might find this site useful, by the way: http://www.babynamesofireland.com/ Lots of information about the myths and meanings behind many of the names, as well as audible pronunciations (should you need them). Behind the Name is another wonderfully accurate site. Here's a link to their list of masculine Irish names: http://www.behindthename.com/nmc/iri_m.p... Hope it helps! And congrats, by the way! ;)
Reply:Dylan, ( is that irish i dont know)
Reply:The name Evan comes to mind. Easy to say, easy to spell. Apparently of Welsh origin, but I like it a lot.

The boy's name Evan \e-van\ is pronounced EV-an. It is of Welsh origin. Variant of a Gaelic name anglicized as John (Hebrew) "the Lord is gracious". In Celtic, the name means "young warrior". In Welsh, it means "God is Good". It is also used as a short form of Evangelos, which means "good messenger" in Greek. In Hebrew, Evan means "rock". See also Evian.

Evan has 15 variant forms: Euan, Euen, Evann, Evans, Ev, Eva, Even, Evin, Evo, Evon, Evyn, Ewan, Ewen, Ewy and Owen.

If you want more Irish, I say you cant beat Patrick, or Padraic ( but I just dont think Paddy would cut on this side of 'the pond' !)

Reply:Br铆n bree-an Brian 'Br铆' means hill and in the context of a name it means 'high (as in noble) and strong'. Brian Boru was the first high King of Ireland and the man who defeated the Vikings at the Battle of Clontarf.

Buach boo-ock Means 'victor or conquerer'.

Cairbre care-bra 'Strong man'. It occurs frequently in Irish mythology, most notably as Cairbre Nia Fer, who was a King of Tara killed by Cuchulainn. His brother later had a hand in killing Cuchulainn.

Colman coal-man Means 'little dove', sometime taken to mean 'peacekeeper'.

Eamon aim-on Edmund, Edward Means 'keeper of riches'. Eamon De Valera was Ireland's first Taoiseach (prime minister) and was later President of Ireland. A variant spelling is Iamonn, which is pronounced Yamon.

Ronan roh-nan Old Irish meaning "little seal"; There was a 6th century saint of that name. Ronan was also a legendary King who was tricked by his second wife into killing his own son. It is a fairly common surname as well as first name.

Tiarn谩n tier-nawn Tiernan Means 'little lord'.

Reply:Bridget Niamh (pron. Neeve) - I have never liked the named Bridget, sorry. Niamh is really weird, no one will ever pronounce it correctly.

Riley Ailbhe (pron. Alba) - Riley is cute, but, I don't like Ailbhe, no one will ever pronounce that one correctly either.

Aerin (pron. Erin) Bristol - Aerin is cute, but, I think it's better spelled ordinary like Erin. Bristol is really cute, too. I don't like how Aerin Bristol flows, though.

Boys:

Aiden Patrick - LOVE it, very cute. I like both Aiden and Patrick. Aiden is at the top of my boy name list and I like Patrick and I think both flow well together.

Reilly Kingston - I would go with Reilly spelled Riley, Riley Kingston is actually really cute. I like it.

Reply:My Gaelic name (which isn't Maryn) is mispronounced constantly in the US, even by educated, worldly people. I spell it more often than I say it. I've learned to answer to names being called out (at the doctor's office or any place they make you wait) that sound more like gargling than someone's name.

My sister's name, Madb, caused her so much grief she legally changed it to Maev--but not before she received a notice requiring her to register for the draft.

but when it comes to Estes as a family name, it could be Irish (something like a short version of Latin name Eustachius), although it is related with Spanish and Italian too. .

What do you think of this Irish Boy's Name?

What do you think of this Irish boy's name?

Caoimheán (keev een)

It means "Beautiful at birth". I adore it's meaning.

What do you think of this Irish Boy's Name?
I love the meaning but how its spelt can cause problems if you don't actually live in Ireland.

Maybe it can be spelt a different way?
Reply:The meaning is lovely and all but the actual name is horrible.
Reply:even if you live in ireland it can cause problems with spelling. its not very common in ireland either. well not in dublin really :)
Reply:I love the meaning and it sounds nice, but the way its spelled he's going to have a hard time in school and in life trying to get people to pronounce it correctly.
Reply:I personally love it! It's really different and unique. And the meaning is sweet. People might mix it up with Kevin, but I guess thats half the fun when they see how its really spelt.

Go with it! xD
Reply:I like it. It will take a while to remember how to spell it but it sounds really nice.
Reply:It is very different.I have never heard it before.I like it.
Reply:I adore the meaning too, this is going onto my list of favourite Irish boys names, 2nd below Liam x
Reply:It's the Irish equivilant of Kevin, and in Ireland it's not commonly used unless lads want to use their Irish name. And we pronounce it more like 'Quee-Veen'- If you sound it like Keev-een it's going to sound like Caoimbha, which is the female equivilant, so be careful.

It's a nice name, but may cause difficulty.
Reply:You know how much I love Irish names -- And I truly love this one!

Caoimheán is just lovely. The sound, classic spelling, the way is floats off of the tongue -- All wondrous. And a MUCH better alternative to the "similar-sounding but much worse" name, Kevin.

The meaning is lovely! Perfect for a child. It reminds me of a female French name, Aceline, which means "Noble at Birth".

Just as a thought: The name Paul Caoimheán sounds lovely :)

XOXO,

Em (that's my new sign-off for all my answers)

Irish name pronunciation?

I found a lovely Irish name that is a form of Vincent, but I can't find the pronunciation. It's spelled Uinseann. Can somebody give it to me phonetically?

Irish name pronunciation?
OON shan

Meaning: Gaining a victory
Reply:It's kind of like "weenshun" or "winshin" if you put less of an accent on it. The U and I form a dipthong. Instead of saying "oo" "ii" as two separate syllables, they run together and form a "we" sound. The "sse" forms is a distinct "sh" as in Sean..
Reply:Uinseann

"win-shan"

This name is the Irish version of Vincent, and means "conquering." There are almost thirty Saint Vincents.

Is Maureen an Irish name?

The girl's name Maureen is pronounced maw-REEN. It is of Irish origin. Variant of Mary (Latin) "star of the sea."

Is Maureen an Irish name?
I think it is of Irish origin.
Reply:Yes.

Reply:Sort of.

If you want a real, traditional Irish name go with Mairin instead. Mairin is really an Irish name, from the Irish language, and Maureen is the "Anglicized" version of it. Meaning, when the English conquered Ireland, they changed the spelling.

The pronunciation is close enough for most English speakers to not tell the difference, so don't worry that it would sound weird. Just say it "Maureen".

I would not personally consider Maureen an Irish name any more than I would consider Katelyn an Irish name (Katelyn is a butchering of the real name Caitlin, which is NOT pronounced like people think it is ... it's COYT-leen. Not cool anymore, huh?)

If you're looking for a name with a general Irish feeling, though, instead of a genuinely Irish one, Maureen works fine.
Reply:Yes it is - variant of the name Mary.
Reply:MAUREEN

Gender: Feminine

Usage: Irish, English

Is there a name for irish music that is sung Acappella ?

I am looking for a way to look up irish songs, that are sung without accompanying instruments. Typically, the lyrics rhyme more than a usual song.

Example:

Ramblin Rover by the Silly Wizards

Is there a name for irish music that is sung Acappella ?
not sure what it would be called, but try using http://pandora.com/ and go to the "Create a New Station" then put the name of the song or the group you mention, and it will build a playlist of similar songs and groups.

You might also try Celtic A Cappella in your search

Do you like the Irish babby name "Weeaboo"?

My husband and I really like this traditional Irish Gaelic name. Can be for a boy or girl, but like the name "Pudenda" tends to refer to females.

I need help remembering the name of an irish mythology story.?

I don't remember all the details, but here's what I have to work with. There were kids that were the children of a king and their mom the queen died. The king married an evil woman and she didn't like the kids so she turned them into swans. I don't remember how it ends, but I think they end up living almost forever in that form. Please help me remember the name of this story!

What was the name of the "illutrious Irish Family" St. Natalis cursed to become werewolves?

For some long past unknown sin the Clan Allta was cursed by the Abbot Natalis (who became Saint Natalis). Two members of the clan had to take the form of a wolf for a period of seven years. Many times they were killed by hunters who did not know they were humans in wolf form. After seven years they returned back into a human and two other members of the clan became wolves. They were known as the Werewolves of Ossory (the Ossory region of Ireland).
